Treatment Overview

What is root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing pain, swelling or an abscess.

In root canal treatment the dentist removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the roots, and fills and seals them. A crown is often placed afterwards to protect the tooth.

Inside the Tooth
1

Pulp chamber

The hollow space inside the crown of the tooth that holds the pulp.

Cleaned
2

Root canals

Thin channels running down the roots; they are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

Shaped & sealed
3

Filling & crown

The canals are sealed and the tooth is rebuilt, often with a crown for protection.

Protected

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Severe or lingering toothache, especially when biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the food or drink is gone
  • Swollen or tender gum near a tooth, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
  • A tooth that has turned darker
  • Deep decay or a cracked tooth (only an examination and X-ray can confirm the need for RCT)
The Upside

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

  • Keeps your natural tooth
  • Usually relieves the pain caused by the infected pulp
  • Stops the infection from spreading from the tooth
  • Avoids the need for an implant, bridge or denture to fill a gap
  • Normal chewing once the tooth is restored

Results differ from person to person. Your dentist will explain what to expect in your case.

Side by Side

Root Canal Treatment vs Tooth Extraction

When a tooth is infected, these are the two main choices. Keeping your own tooth is usually preferred when it can be saved.

Feature Root canal treatment Tooth extraction
Your natural tooth Kept Removed
Visits Usually 1–3, plus a crown if needed Usually 1
Afterwards Tooth restored with a filling or crown The gap usually needs an implant, bridge or denture
Neighbouring teeth Stay in place May drift into the gap if it is not replaced
Chewing Normal once the tooth is restored Affected on that side until the gap is replaced

Step-by-Step

What to Expect During Treatment

The exact steps depend on your diagnosis. Your dentist will explain your own plan.

  1. 01

    Examination & X-ray

The dentist checks the tooth and takes an X-ray to confirm the problem and see the shape of the roots.

  2. 02

    Local anaesthesia

The tooth and the area around it are numbed.

  3. 03

    Cleaning the canals

A small opening is made, the infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

  4. 04

    Filling & sealing

The canals are filled with a rubber-like material (gutta-percha) and sealed. A temporary filling may be placed between visits.

  5. 05

    Restoring the tooth

A permanent filling and often a crown are placed, especially on back teeth.

  6. 06

    Follow-up

An X-ray may be taken later to check healing.

Your Questions

Usually one to three, depending on the infection and the tooth. A crown, if needed, is made afterwards.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
Often, yes, especially for back teeth, which take heavy chewing forces. Your dentist will advise based on how much of the tooth is left.
What happens if I do not get the root canal done?
The infection can spread and cause swelling or an abscess, and the tooth may eventually need to be removed.
